The gate to “Astilleros de Mallorca”, one of the most renowned shipyards on the island, is the door to another world where the names of yachts owners, refitted for Millions of Euros are scarcely mentioned.
Project manager Stefan Enders assures he will only talk about boats that have left the yard or those that are about to come in. Though modern luxury yachts provide the main income, the shipyard located on Palma’s Contramuelle Mollet is concentrating more on classic yachts and those of historic value.
“Hispania” the elegant sailing yacht that once used to belong to King Alfonso XIII, grandfather to the Spanish King Juan Carlos I, is to arrive in Palma for a complete refit in the near future. “Hispania” has participated in the most distinguished regattas in Cannes, St. Tropez and Palma. Approximately one hundred years later, the carpenters of “Astilleros de Mallorca” are working on a replacement of the 18-meter main mast.
According to the General Manager Diego Colon, the restoration of old boats is an interesting market which is gaining more and more significance in Spain. Nevertheless “Astilleros de Mallorca” is the only shipyard offering such a service in Mallorca, keeping the classic spirit alive and at the same time reviving the traditional techniques. Retracing the past Mr. Colon and his employees are researching books and old photos for the original design and dimensions of classic yachts. The yard founded in 1942 primarily focused on building trawlers, containerships, rescue craft, fireboats and later yachts. Since 1995 repairs and refits are the main focus as it is a dependable market.
On average 120 boats per year are in the yard with 75 employees working on up to 15 projects at one time. The boatyard comprises of a number of smaller independent companies and workshops including varnishers, metalworkers, electricians, mechanics, upholstery services and associated trades. Clients come from all over the world and the projects vary significantly. Some boats simply require a new coat of antifouling while others are in need for a full refit worth several million Euros.
One example for a complete refit is the charter yacht “Passion” owned by an American. The part of the deck formally reserved for a helipad and dinghies has been converted into a Jacuzzi for up to six people with generous areas to luxuriate and relax. The interior was partly panelled, floors covered with extravagant carpet & baths fitted with ornate marble. After 22 months on the hard the sleek white yacht was once again ready to set sail.
This historic shipyard, combining its competent nature and foresight, has ensured itself a bright future. Remaining confident, “Astilleros de Mallorca” is set on keeping the gates open, welcoming the elite industry as they have done since founded 64 years earlier.
Much has already been achieved. Eight chicks hatched in the year 2005 and seven of these survived, says Evelyn Tewes who has received several awards for her work. Her latest award, in March 2005 at the Internationale Tourismus-Börse in Berlin, was the 'Green Palm' from the magazine 'Geo Saison' for exemplary involvement with the environment.
